It is hard to tell how many of the units were sold to people that already owned a Quest 2, and how many bought a Quest 2 just to play RE4. Unsurprisingly the release of RE4 made a big splash. The #1 peak in August was “A Township Tale”. Before November with almost 60%, the two top apps combined generated on average 25% of all the new ratings, with the highest being 32% in February. Looking at the total and average numbers instead of the median, it becomes more obvious how big the impact of RE 4 and Blade and Sorcery: Nomad is. One color represents one position from #1 to #20, not one particular app. The lower graph shows the stacked number of new ratings. The table of apps only showed monthly changes since Februar. Either the median or the table has errors, but I cannot tell which.
Top graph now contains a second line for the median, as the median reported by RoadToVR didn’t match the median of the values in the table reported by RoadToVR in February, July and September. Re-did the numbers to calculate the average. So while the mean is 231, the average is 609. This months there about 12K new ratings for all top 20 apps combined, but almost 60% of these are from RE4 and Blade and Sorcery: Nomad alone. So far I have tracked the mean number as given in the article, but it might make more sense to track the average. The drop from July to August should be due to a lack of new users, as Oculus stopped selling the Quest 2 for a month, following the recall. The drop till April, followed by continuous increase might be due to initially the number of early adopters dropping out after a few months outweighing the number of new buyers, until only those of the 2020 buyers remained that will most likely continue to use the Quest 2. It shows that Quest 2 usage was initially very high after launch, but then fell back. The graph shows the mean number of new ratings since the release of the Quest 2, which can be used as a marker for total user activity on the platform. This kind of answers if a big game release can rekindle interest in the platform.
